Appointment to the DRB Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Brenda Sweeney, Deputy City Clerk Robin Crough, City Clerk SUBJECT: Appointment to the Design Review Board (DRB) MEETING DATE: August 19, 2019 MEETING TYPE Action RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint one member to the Design Review Board, Architect position, with a term ending June 30, 2021. BACKGROUND: The Design Review Board (DRB) currently has one vacant Architect position. Two new applications have been received. The Design Review Board was created under Section 18.62 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. Members are appointed to staggered two-year terms. The Board is charged with the design review of certain plans and proposals and should be comprised of six professional and two non- professional members. Professional members should be degreed in their respective disciplines and/or otherwise licensed or certified by their respective professional authorities. They shall include four architects, one architectural historian, one landscape architect/designer, and two non-professional members. At least one of the professional members shall have a demonstrated expertise in urban design. The non-professional members shall have an interest in, or knowledge of, architecture, urban design, or historic preservation. No member shall serve as a member of the City Planning Board or the Zoning Commission concurrently. The Board is generally advisory to the City Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and the City Commission, although it does make the final decisions on some minor applications. This board currently has one vacancy. The City Clerk’s Office has received two applications, with their relevant qualifications indicated below. 1. As an architect working within the City of Bozeman, I understand well the goals and requirements of the UDC and how architects and developers can fulfill those goals. I received my M. Arch from UC Berkeley in 2015 and have 6 years of prior construction and contracting experience, thus am equally comfortable discussing the practical constraints of building and the conceptual underpinnings of design. I am excited for the opportunity to serve the community I grew up in and ensure the incredible character of this place we all love.
