Hi Chris,
I see the Bogert Pavilion is on the City Commissioners agenda tonight. Attached is a letter I sent to the City months
ago (with no response), so I am not sure that ever read it.
Anyway, I hope they can keep the existing structure as it is esthetic and functional and fits nicely in the park. I am
sure the engineers that inspected the structure know what is going on there. I live a block away and use the park all
the time.

Hi Mike, I am sorry I did not speak up, as I noticed last summer that the glue-laminated arch beams
were splitting apart at their bases. It would have been, and still can be, a simple maintenance fix to
reinforce them.
Note, the beams were designed to act as one piece, and were just bolted to a steel plate at the base.
But, they are starting to peel apart at the base, where they are exposed (hence the base plate is only
attached to the central portion of the beam). Simply running two heavy duty (3/4 to 1-inch) bolts with
large washers through the glue-lams near the base will do it. That way the entire beam will be one,
integral unit.
The snow load contributed to the failure, but probably would not have happened if the beam had acted
as a solid unit. As the beam flexed under the load, it split where it had already started to peel apart at
the end.
I hope that we can keep this pavilion intact as it is esthetic and a great asset to the community.
