Dear Commissioners
You are to be commended for sticking to the good principles of understanding the value of maintaining the
40 acres of wetlands at Story Mill Park for wildlife and keeping it (or doing your level best) dog free.
We are losing areas all over town to lawns, housing developments, pavement and offices and thus
displacing much of what is wild habitat and the lives who depend on that habitat for their well being.
My concern is that you have given a month over to not putting restrictions in until August 14 which is ample
time for anyone to walk through the wetlands with their dogs. They may not like keeping their dogs on
leash in other areas of the park or off leash in the designated areas as you might be aware of the other
places where dogs are required to be on leash (Cherry River Fishing Access a good example) and too many
scoff at the requirement and the un picked up dog piles are about human sized (to be blunt) .
Jeff Krause is correct in his statements that there will need to be good animal control (or other) policing to
remind park goers of the respect for the wild beings.
This new park is a great idea! I would have liked to see less pavement, but the paved areas might save the
rest from being worn down. I'm glad some mature trees were left as those are better habitat for birds that
little trees.
In conclusion - Keep the wetland acreage dog free. Consider some sort of gate as well so that bikes can't go
there either, thus giving walkers the safety to stroll without needing to be concerned for looking out for
bikes.
GVLT has some great signs around town about picking up after your dog. If only more dog owners would
obey and be more thoughtful of other folks and not just their own dogs.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Hopper
