HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 83- American Indian Day May 13 1983 PRO C LAM A T ION -------~~--- AMERICAN INDIAN DAY. 1983 May 13. 1983 ***************************** WHEREAS. the Congress of the United States. by House Joint Resolution 459 (P.L. 97-445) has authorized and requested that May 13. 1983 be designated as American Indian Day. 1983; and WHEREAS. President Ronald Reagan has proclaimed May 13. 1983 as American Indian Day. 1983; and WHEREAS. American Indians represent 5 percent of Montana's total population and her largest minority population; and WHEREAS. Article X. Section 1 (2) of the Constitution of the State of Montana provides that lithe State recognizes the distinct and unique cultural heritage of the American Indians;" and WHEREAS, this State's Indian population has contributed to its art and culture. its strength and spirit, its sense of history. and its sense of purpose; and WHEREAS. the history of the City of Bozeman has been richly enhanced by its co-existence with Indian people; and WHEREAS. Montana State University, the Center for Native American Studies and the MSU Indian Club, has dedicated the Eighth Annual Indian Club Pow Wow and Celebration to be held May 13 and 14. 1983 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in honor of the survival of Indian culture and heritage; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alfred M. Stiff, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim the day of May 13, 1983, as AMERICAN INDIAN DAY. 1983 and do urge and invite the citizens of Bozeman to join with her Indian neighbors in celebration to reaffirm their dedication to the ideals to which our first Americans subscribed. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the great seal of the SEAL City of Bozeman. in the State of Montana. to be affixed at Bozeman, Montana. this 9th day of May. in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Eighty-Three. /' -
