HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 91- Odyssey of the Mind Days May 23-25 1991 PROCLAMATION "ODYSSEY OF THE MIND DAYS" May 23, 24 and 25, 1991 WHEREAS Oddyssey of the Mind challenges students in grades K-12 to come up with creative solutions to one of five problems. Students presented their solutions at regional competitions throughout the state, and winning teams advanced to the state meet in Bozeman. State winners are now eligible to advance to the World Finals competition, where they will compete with teams from around the United States and around the world, including teams from China, Mexico, USSR, Canada and Poland; and WHEREAS the Montana Odyssey of the Mind program has grown from 1 school membership in 1981 to 118 schools in 1991; and several thousand students from across the state participated in this year's state meet; and WHEREAS three Bozeman teams were first place winners and one team was a second place winner in the Odyssey of the Mind state competition held in Bozeman on Saturday, March 16, 1991; and WHEREAS those teams were comprised of the following students: Bozeman Junior High School - first place in Problem Buggy--Light Division 2. Karin Blake, Ryan Olson, Garrick Peterson, Chris Fowlkes, James Larsen, Owen Shively. Coach: Patty Blake. Wi IIson School - first place in Problem Super Collider Division 2. Warren Kommers, Jenny Hanson, Judi Arbuckle, Thresa Pattee, William Dwyer, Mike Cashman, Mark Pence. Coach: Diane Kommers/ Jack Hanson. Irving School - first place in Problem Super Collider Division 1. Jared Barber, Ryan Berger, Tanisha Boyer, Kaye Cheever, Kurt Hanson, Timothy Oakberg, Abby Ward. Coach: Jack Hanson/ Bernice Oakberg. Bozeman Junior/Senior High School - second place in Super Collider. Bryan Popiel, Mary Campbell, Charlie Able, Don Jenkins and Nick Daniels. Coach: Mike Popiel; and WHEREAS the above-listed students finishing in first place are now eligible to attend the World Finals, which will be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, on May 23, 24 and 25, 1991; and WHEREAS the students are now in the process of fund raising for this event and have received, to date, a grant from the Dennis R. Washington Foundation to cover a portion of "ihe travel costs. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert L. Hawks, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim May 23, 24 and 25, 1991, as "ODYSSEY OF THE MIND DAYS" in the City of Bozeman and encourage all residents and business owners to participate in whatever way possible to recognize the efforts of these students and to help provide the necessary funding for their attendance at the World Finals.
