HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 89- Red Ribbon Week October 22-29 1989 PROCLAMATION RED RI BBON WEEK October 22-29, 1989 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WHEREAS, alcohol and other drug abuse in this nation has reached epi- demic stages, and the 15 to 24-year-old age group is dying at a faster rate than any other age group; and WHEREAS, it is imperative that visible, unified prevention education efforts by community members be launched to reduce the de- mand for drugs; and WHEREAS, the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth are sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign offering citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to drug free lifestyles; and WHEREAS, the National Red Ribbon Campaign will be celebrated in every community in America during "Red Ribbon Week" , October 22-29, 1989; and WHEREAS, President George Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush are the Na- tional Honorary Chairmen, and Governor and Mrs. Stan Stephens of Montana are the State Honorary Chairmen to pro- vide this community focus on a Drug Free America; and WHEREAS, business, government, law enforcement, schools, religious in- stitutions, service organizations, youth, physicians, senior citizens, military, sports teams and individuals will demon- strate their commitment to drug-free, healthy lifestyles by wearing and displaying red ribbons during this week-long campaign; and WHEREAS, the community of Bozeman further commits its resou rces to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon Campaign. NOW THEREFORE, I, Alfred M. Stiff, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim the week of October 22-29, 1989 as RED RIBBON WEEK and encourage our citizens to participate in drug prevention education activities, making a visible statement that we are strongly committed to a drug free community; and to further encourage all citizens to pledge: My Choice . . . Drug Free.
