PRO C LAM A T ION KAPPA DELTA CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION DAY March 14, 1987 ************************************** WHEREAS, child abuse is a preventable national tragedy, from which over one million American children suffer each year, and from which more than 2,000 of them die needless deaths; and WHEREAS, the problem of child abuse touches every community in our State and Nation; and WHEREAS, the financial cost society bears in dealing with the results of child abuse is enormous, with the cost in human suffering and wasted individual potential immeasurable; and WHEREAS, the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse believes that prevention, and the saving of lives and dollars, is even more important than treating the problem after it occurs; and WHEREAS, prevention activities can keep people out of an already over- burdened and expensive social-service system; and WHEREAS, the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse believes that abuse can only be prevented through the development of activities and increased awareness at the community and local levels; and WHEREAS, Kappa Delta Sorority has undertaken a nationwide fundraising campaign on Saturday, March 14, 1987, with 80 percent of the money raised to be used in locally sponsored child abuse prevention efforts, and 20 percent to go to the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Judith A. Mathre, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim March 14, 1987, to be "KAPPA DELTA CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION DAY" in the City of Bozeman and urge all citizens of this city to support the activities of Kappa Delta Sorority on behalf of the prevention of child abuse.
