WORLD POPULATION AWARENESS WEEK
April 20-25, 1987

WHEREAS, the world's population has reached 5 billion and is growing at
the unprecedented rate of 87 million a year; and
WHEREAS, rapid population growth causes or intensifies a wide range of
grave problems in the developing world, including environmental
degradation, urban deterioration, unemployment, malnutrition,
hunger, resource depletion and economic stagnation; and
WHEREAS, 50 percent of the 10 million infant deaths and 25 percent of the
500,000 maternal deaths that occur each year in the developing
world could be prevented if voluntary child spacing and maternal
health programs could be substantially expanded; and
WHEREAS, some 500 million people in the developing world want and need
family planning but do not have access or means to such ser-
vices; and
WHEREAS, the United States has been the leading advocate of the univer-
sally recogn.ized basic human right of couples to determine the
size and spacing of their famili.es.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Judi.th A. Mathre, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do
hereby proclaim the week of April 20 through 25, 1987, as
"WORLD POPULATION AWARENESS WEEK"
in the City of Bozeman and call upon all citizens to reflect upon the
consequences of overpopulation.
