PROCLAMATION
UNITED NATIONS DAY
October 24, 1989

WHEREAS, the Un i ted Nations is celebrating its forty-fourth birthday
this year; and
WHEREAS, the important efforts of the United Nations in the field of
human rights, especially the rights of children, requi re the
full support of both governments and peoples of our world;
and
WHEREAS, the United States has a special opportunity to take leadership
within the United Nations for the furtherance of the princi-
ples and goals of the world organization, particularly in the
area of children's rights; and
WHEREAS, this year is the thirtieth anniversary of the Declaration of the
Rights of the Child and the tenth anniversary of the Interna-
tional Year of the Child, which offers an appropriate oppor-
tunity to seek greater protection for children through an
international convention on the rights of the child; and
WHEREAS, all Americans are called upon by the President of the United
States of America to reflect upon and participate in programs
and activities celebrating the forty-fourth anniversary of the
United Nations and focusing on the rights of children.
NOW, THEREFORE, I , Alfred M. Stiff, Mayor of the City of Bozeman,
Montana, do hereby proclaim October 24, 1989 as
UNITED NATIONS DAY
and call upon all the citizens of Bozeman to observe that day, and any
other appropriate day this fall, in the spirit of common purpose ex-
pressed in the United Nations Charter.
