PROCLAMATION
World AIDS Day
December 1, 1 998

WHEREAS, the global spread of HIV infection and AIDS necessitates a worldwide effort to
increase communication, education and action to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS; and
WHEREAS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) observes December
1 of each year as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and strengthen the worldwide
effort to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS; and
WHEREAS, UNAID estimates that 30.6 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS, with
more than half of the new infections in young people under the age of 25; and
WHEREAS, The American Association for World Health is encouraging a better understanding
of the challenge of HIV/AIDS nationally as it recognizes that the number of people
diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the United States continues to increase, with
673,170 AIDS cases reported as of August 31, 1998, 395 AIDS cases reported
in the State of Montana as of September 30, 1998; and
WHEREAS, World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to focus on HIV infection and AIDS,
caring for people with HIV infection and AIDS, and learning about HIV/AIDS; and
WHEREAS, The 1998 World AIDS Day them "Be a Force for Change" (a) challenges young
people around the world to recognize the crucial role they play in the ever-changing
course of the AIDS pandemic; (b) aims to motivate young people to get involved
in reducing the spread of HIV; and (c) encourages them to have compassion for
and lend support to those affected by HIV/AIDS.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alfred M. Stiff, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim
December 1, 1998 as
"World AIDS Day"
in the City of Bozeman, and encourage the citizens of Bozeman to take part in activities and
observances designed to increase awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS as a global
challenge, to take part in HIV/AIDS prevention activities and programs and to join the global
effort to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
SEAL IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Bozeman, in the State of Montana, to be affixed
at Bozeman, Montana, this 16th day of
November in the year of our Lord One Thousand
