PROCLAMATION
Leif Ericson Day
October 9, 2005
Whereas, Leif Ericson and his fellow Norse seafarers reached the North American shore
at Newfoundland in approximately the year 1000 A.D.; and
Whereas, the discoveries of Leif Ericson are documented in the Great Icelandic Sagas
and the archeological findings by Dr. Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad at L'Anse
Aux Meadows in Newfoundland; and
Whereas, the accomplishments of Leif Ericson draw attention to the period of
colonization of Greenland from Iceland from the late 900s and well into the
1200s; and
Whereas, it is important to note that Leif Ericson was a farmer from the Greenland
settlement who was sent on a mission by the King of Norway to Christianize
the Norse settlements of the North Atlantic; and
Whereas, the existing body of knowledge probably aided Christopher Columbus in the
planning of his voyage 500 years after Ericson; and
Whereas, Sons of Norway, as the largest Norwegian association in Canada, Norway and
America, is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of Leif Ericson.
Now, Therefore, I, Andrew L. Cetraro, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim
October 9, 2005 as
"Leif Ericson Day"
in the City of Bozeman, Montana.
SEAL IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Bozeman, in the State of Montana, to be affixed at
Bozeman, Montana, this 3rd day of October in the
year 0 Lord Two Thousand and Five.
