Hello Commissioners,
My name is Amanda Eva Jungles and I am a young professional and Bozeman resident living at 1805 S
Rouse Avenue, 59715. Additionally, I work in a marketing and business development capacity for a national
architecture and engineering firm with an office in Bozeman. I am concerned about the design of the
Aviator Building that was reviewed by the Design Review Board on 4.10.19. I do not feel like enough
thought was given to the building's future architectural contribution to the context of the neighborhood
and as a prominent structure within an important entry corridor for many residents and visitors entering
Bozeman from the Four Corners area. I feel that the current design is inappropriate in scale and is not fit for
this prominent location in our city. In my opinion, the following sections of the City of Bozeman's Unified
Development Code have been overlooked and make this design unfit to be approved.
Sec. 38.530.030 - Building Character
A. Intent. To promote regionally appropriate architecture that is based on human scaled design details,
durable high quality materials, sustainable design measures, and that responds uniquely to the site’s
context.
I do not feel that this building design complies with A. Intent. The “aviation” theme is not representative of
Bozeman and the scale is not that of human proportion. I do not think the neighborhood should be
identified by a Disneyland-like building such as the Aviator Building.
Sec. 38.530.040 - Building massing & Articulation
A. Intent. To articulate building elements in order to achieve an appropriate perceived scale and add visual
interest.
While the aviation theme might provide visual interest to some of Bozeman’s population, it is distracting
the building’s design and the scale of the “cloud-like” elements are not appropriate scale in comparison to
the rest of the building.
Sec. 38.520.010 – Purpose
A. Intent. To promote thoughtful layout of buildings, parking areas, and circulation, service, landscaping,
and amenity elements that enhances Bozeman’s visual character, promotes compatibility between
developments and uses, and enhances the function of developments.
The design of the Aviator Building does not take into account the context of the neighborhood character
and neighboring developments. It is not a timeless design, does not link to Bozeman’s traditions or history,
and it will not be a legacy building for the city of Bozeman. It in fact has very little relation to the
surrounding buildings.
In conclusion, I would recommend the City Commission reclaim this project and propose a redesign to
comply with the items highlighted above due to its prominence and location as an important structure
within a critical entry corridor to the City of Bozeman. This design should absolutely be reconsidered.
I am available for any further questions you may have based on my comments above. I will be monitoring
the commission agendas to make sure I am available to attend a future meeting to share my concerns in
person.
Regards,
Amanda Eva Jungles
