Subject: Petra Academy at PCC Meeting
Mr. Mehl,
Thanks for introducing yourself to me at the April 2nd Planning Coordination Committee meeting upstairs in the
courthouse. I hope you have had a great month of April.
As I was attending the meeting I shared some concerns Petra Academy has about development near us. Following my
presentation you approached me in the audience and shared that my concerns were city issues. You requested that I
send you a bullet‐point list of those concerns, for which I was grateful. This email is my effort to communicate those
items to you.
* Water Drainage We have 5 drains on the exterior of our building meant to handle water run‐off. Increasingly, as we
get inundated with a hard rain or rapid snow melt, these drains back up, and water floods out onto our property. We
are concerned that with additional facilities being added to the water drainage system (i.e. businesses and the new high
school), we will be at risk for frequent floodings and possible water damage. Can the capacity for water drainage be
increased as Cottonwood Road is expanded in the near future?
* Traffic Safety Our one access road, Classical Way, connects to Cottonwood Road. With current traffic use it is very
difficult to gain access each day to Cottonwood Road from Classical Way during school opening and closing hours . The
Adam Bronken soccer complex joins us in this dilemma during times of games and practice. The traffic situation is
untenable enough that it borders on dangerous as frustrated drivers begin to take chances to access Cottonwood. With
an expected increase in traffic from the addition of the new high school, is there anything that can be done to mitigate
this? New traffic light? Roundabout?
* Pedestrian Safety We currently have families that walk to school from the Valley West subdivision. Further, there
are those who are walking to the Bronken Soccer Complex. There is no existing crosswalk for pedestrians to cross
Cottonwood Road. In addition the speed limit is 40 mph on Cottonwood Road with little to no caution to drivers for
children or their families walking, playing, or trying to cross. In lieu of an expansion of motorists in the area, is it possible
to have a crosswalk established and to have an adjustment made to the speed limit on Cottonwood Road?

As I mentioned earlier, we are grateful for the opportunity to share these concerns in a forum where solutions could be
considered. Feel free to contact us at the school if you have any questions or wish to discuss the situations further.
Blessings, Mark Christofferson
