As a property owner across the street from the Rialto, I have no particular opinion about the granting or withholding of this special use permit request. However, I think that not only the Community Development department but also the County Health Department should consider the broader long-term consequences of permitting another source for alcohol on Main Street. The liquor corporations have been extremely successful in preventing the public at large from receiving the information that alcohol is a known Group 1 carcinogen, so labeled by the World Health Organization in 1988. Liquor corporations’ advertising for the health benefits of anti-oxidents in red wine were designed to supersede this information. I’ve provided a link to the investigative report by journalist and breast cancer survivor Stephanie Mencimer which should be required reading for all those who will participate in this decision. The costs of health problems due to alcohol consumption are borne by all of us. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/04/did-drinking-give-me-breast-cancer/ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(18)30134-X/fulltext Charlene M.
