Since I last wrote, about a month ago, the building department has continued to hemorrhage staff. In the
last month or so we have lost Derryck, Bill, Brandon, and as of Friday, Vince. With AT LEAST one other
inspector shopping offers he has received, the issue is about to get even worse. How will our city continue
to review plans and inspect homes? Just the commercial projects alone will take all of the staff that is left.
So, I ask, what is going to be done? I keep hearing, "we are working on hiring". That doesn't seem to be
going so well. Eventually you reach a point where you don't even have enough staff to train the new
individuals that might be hired. This is an emergency! What do leaders do when there is an emergency?
They act. What is the commission doing? What is the city manager doing? Planning manager? Building
department manager? Maybe they have a magic trick they are about to reveal, but I think the commission
would be remiss if they were to not start delving into this immediately, asking for answers. Please let me
know what is being done to handle this mass exodus.
