Subject: MDT Comments Downtown Bozeman Improvement Plan
Ms. Surratt, as we discussed, MDT recently became aware of the Downtown Bozeman Improvement Plan, which
is scheduled to be considered by the City Commission in the April 15th, 2019 meeting.
\� This Plan includes recommended changes for roads on the State Highway System that are not consistent with
the design requirements for those roadways. These design requirements are intended to preserve and protect
the safety and operations of the State Highway System while also ensuring these roads remain eligible for
federal aid and achieve the performance expected through the federal program.
As this Plan moves forward and is discussed in the community and considered by City staff and the City
Commission; MDT's role for decision making and requirements for the State Highway System routes need to be
understood and acknowledged throughout.
We've also discussed options that would allow the City and community to manage these roads at the local level
rather than as State Highway System routes. If the City is interested in pursuing this option, MDT staff will
review system modifications that would achieve that goal.
Please include this letter as MDT's comments on the Downtown Bozeman Improvement Plan when it's taken
before the City Commission, and don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or would like us to look
into the potential system modifications.
