Bozeman, MT 59718 March 14, 2019 Mayor Cynthia Andrus 121 N Rouse Ave Bozeman, MT 59715 Dear Mayor Andrus: I am an 18-year-old student at Belgrade High School in Belgrade, Montana. I'm writing to you today to express my concern about the issue of homelessness in Bozeman. As you may know, in Bozeman there is a seasonal warming center which allows the homeless to spend a night out of the cold from 7pm to 7am. Although this is a very considerate . organization; I feel it is not enough in the cold winters in Montana. As of these two past months the early morning has been ranging from temperatures of 30F to -30F in Bozeman. The rest of the day following the same patterns. I believe that it is only a matter of time when someone could die because there is no shelter that is open to accommodate them. As a state that is known for freezing winters and lots of snow, I would expect we would be prepared to provide more shelter against the killing wind and cold. As a growing city, there will inevitably be more homeless people. As statistics show a large majority of the homeless population are either drug addicts, mentally ill, or both. This also means they need more care due to their conditions. If change was made we can become a better community for those in need during winter. Please consider my stance on the problem. I believe increasing the amount of time the center is open would help. Or increasing the awareness about the problem can create all the difference. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Sincerely, , 7r Taylor Martin
