Proclamation to Recognize Travis W. Atkins Week
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Travis W.Atkins being from Bozeman and attended the Bozeman Public School system
and his parents still reside in Gallatin County; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins honorably served in the United States Army; and
Whereas, on June 1, 2007 Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins was on patrol as part of the 10th Mountain Division
during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was detaining one of four suspicious individuals. During his effort
to detain the individual he noticed that the individual had a suicide vest and tackled the suicide bomber which
shielded three of his soldiers from the blast and saving their lives and sacrificing his; and
Whereas, for his actions he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military honor
given; and
Whereas, on March 12, 2019 the President of the United States announced that for his sacrifice Staff Sergeant
Travis W.Atkins will posthumously receive the Medal of Honor during a White House Ceremony on March 27,
2019 in Washington D.C; and
Whereas,the Medal of Honor is the Highest and most prestigious award for individuals serving in the military
for acts of valor that go above and beyond; and
Whereas,Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins will be the third Montana born recipient and the first from Bozeman,
Montana;
Now, therefore, I, Cynthia L. Andrus, the Mayor of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim the week of March 2511, -
March 291h as Travis W_Atkins Week in honor of being awarded the Medal of Honor.
