Alderson yesterday and saw 2 loose pit bulls wandering around. She called the non-emergency police line and notified them. I urge you guys to take some pro-active things concerning pit bulls in our community. You often hear pit bull owners saying, “my dog is so gentle.” You hear it all the time. It is a big lie constantly promulgated by pit bull owners. Pit bulls are lethal. I wish you would initiate a crackdown on unleashed dogs and and begin a community wide educational campaign about the dangers of this breed of dog. Perhaps the city should impose a really huge fine for the owner of a dog who is off-leash and attacks someone. Who knows? Maybe a $10,000 or $20,000 fine ordinance would serve as an incentive to prevent a future pit bull attack. The owner of the pit bull in the 2017 attack was not imprisoned. When you think of the viciousness and terror of that pit bull attack it is chilling our system of justice handed him just a $1,300 fine. God forbid if a child is maimed on Peet’s Hill or some other park/neighborhood where pit bulls roam off-leash. A horrible attack is going to happen (again) sooner or later if you neglect to take any preventative actions. The city can’t just cross its fingers hoping nothing bad will happen. I shutter thinking of a child in Bozeman being mauled by a pit bull. It is so sad to say but we are very lucky it hasn’t yet happened. With so many pit bulls in Bozeman would you agree there is a high probability of this horror? I’m not sure what exactly the city should do but you’ve got to take some action. There are places in the world where pit bulls are banned. Would it be worth banning pit bulls if a life can be saved? Is it such a sacrifice to not own a pit bull? People can get another type of dog as a pet. I understand a ban is probably not going to happen in Bozeman but I hope each of you think about what we should do. There is a pit bull problem in our society. Please recognize it and do something before it’s too late for some innocent child. Thank you so much for listening. Best wishes, Doug Dietsch Bozeman
