Dear Walton Properties HOA,
Thank you for your letter of January 10, 2018 concerning traffic and vehicle speeds on 151h Street between Oak
and Durston Streets. I have spoken to several city staff including Police Chief Steve Crawford and City Engineer
Shawn Kohtz and offer this response and plan for moving forward.
The City has been aware of neighborhood concerns of traffic and speeding for several years. In an effort to
address those concerns we have instituted extra police patrols, moved speed limit signs, and installed our radar
trailer at various times. It is important to note that 15th Street is classified as a "collector" in the City's
transportation plan. It is designed, and intended,to carry more traffic than a "local" street. This does not mean,
however, drivers on 15th are exempted from the posted speed limit or other adopted traffic laws.
In an effort to bring more clarity and data to the speeds and traffic on 15th Street, the City will conduct a speed
study using advanced traffic analysis equipment.Speed data is used to set appropriate speed limits per standard
transportation engineering practice. We will begin this effort later in the year when the streets are clear of
snow and traffic resumes its normal patterns. This data will determine the actual speeds of vehicles using 15th
Street and can inform city departments where to direct our efforts to address any safety issues identified by the
data.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns and we will continue to share what we learn.
Sincere ,
Andrea Surratt
