HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-19-19 Public Comment - C. Anderson (MontPIRG) - MontPIRG Chapter in BozemanFrom: Carl Anderson, MontPIRG To: Agenda Subject: MontPIRG Bozeman Campus Organizer Date: Tuesday, February 19, 2019 4:06:30 PM To whom it may concern: Hello, my name is Carl Anderson and I am the Campus Organizer for the Bozeman Chapter of the Montana Public Interest Research Group (MontPIRG). We are a student run, nonpartisan organization which focuses on two particular goals. Primarily, we work to empower the leaders of tomorrow by mentoring students in political organization and community engagement. Secondly, we campaign and lobby for issues pertaining to consumer advocacy, tenant/landlord relationships, environment/natural resources, voting rights and education. It is a well-established organization in the Missoula/UofM community as it has been operating there since 1981. However, they have decided to branch out to other communities and establish a presence here at MSU. I am a graduate of MSU and began work with them as the organizer for the Montanans for the Six-Mill Levy campaign in Gallatin, Park, and Silverbow counties. One of my primary actions right now is to speak with members of the MSU and Bozeman communities to ascertain what role MontPIRG might serve here in Bozeman. I would like to schedule a time to sit down for a conversation with each of the commissioners not only for the purpose of introductions but also to open a dialogue regarding how my organization and I can best serve you and the community. During these conversations with members of the community, several people have suggested that it may be beneficial for us to set up some sort of program where we elect a student representative to attend city commission meetings on a regular basis to foster a more positive relationship between MSU and the Bozeman community. We are doing just that and myself and said representative will be attending the next meeting and will hopefully have a chance to introduce ourselves. Otherwise, I thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to meeting with each of you. Best regards, Carl A. Anderson Bozeman Campus Organizer MontPIRG (406) 351-1621
