Airbnb can be an excellent lodging choice for your trips to ski country. Websites like Airbnb and HomeAway allow
you to rent homes, condominiums, or even rooms in a safe, monitored, and relatively inexpensive way. Hotels and
motels can get spendy in a hurry and these vacation rental sites can provide a far more comfortable and intimate feel
to your hallowed ski trip.

These short-term vacation rentals have become so popular in ski towns, that many local governments are moving to
place restrictions on them. The rise of Airbnb and HomeAway in small mountain towns the already slim housing
market even more difficult for locals. Out-of-towners buy up local real estate and turn them into lucrative vacation
rentals which puts the squeeze on the local ski bums simply looking for a place to live.
Regardless of whether or not this is bad for mountain communities, vacation rentals are here to stay. Airbnb just
released data on the most popular destinations for their vacation rentals<https://press.airbnb.com/look-snow-further-
10-of-the-most-popular-ski-destinations-in-north-america/>. Here is a list of these desirable ski towns and the
percentage bookings have increased over the past year. Note: Defining a couple of these towns as “ski destinations”
may be a stretch. **cough cough Colorado Springs cough**.
1. Big Sky, Montana – 160%
2. Bozeman, Montana – 156%
3. Kamloops, BC – 145%
4. Collingwood, Ontario – 142%
5. Boise, Idaho- 138%
6. Colorado Springs, Colorado – 138%
7. Revelstoke, BC – 123%
8. Mount Hood Village, Oregon – 120%
9. Stowe, Vermont – 115%
10. Girdwood, Alaska – 83%
You won’t be shocked to find Big Sky and Bozeman atop this list. Montana has become increasingly popular over
the last decade. Collingwood, Ontario is surprising but makes sense. Collingwood is home to Blue Mountain and it
is just a couple hours from Toronto, Canada’s largest city. Boise, Idaho is a bit of a head-scratcher, but is only 20-
miles from Bogus Basin.
