MSU and City ADU Student Preliminary Design Project Commission Memo Montana State University – School of Architecture Accessory Dwelling Unit Design Project October 1, 2018 Page 1 of 1 Report To: Mayor and City Commission From: Courtney Johnson, Senior Planner Marty Matsen, Director of Community Development Subject: Montana State University and City of Bozeman Accessory Dwelling Unit Design Project – Student Preliminary Design Presentation Meeting Date: October 1, 2018 Agenda Item Type: Special Presentation Report Date: September 20, 2018 BACKGROUND: The City of Bozeman and MSU have enjoyed a long history of collaboration and partnership serving the community. The School of Architecture (SOA) Community Design Center (CDC) works within our local communities to provide quality design services. This fall semester the students enrolled in this 4th year design studio wish to work with the City and the community to analyze the feasibility of accessory dwelling unit (ADU) construction in the City. They will work with local residents to design ADUs, and to present their findings and designs to the community. The City desires to assist in the ADU design project by providing funding and staff time for regulatory review and advice regarding site selection, affordable housing strategies, planning guidance, professional development and public presentation opportunities. The focus of the studio will be the design of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) to meet or exceed the requirements of the newly updated Unified Development Code (UDC). The City advertised this partnership to the Community and have six sites with excited homeowners participating. Each site has its own unique code or site features. The students will be working closely with Homeowners, City Staff, local Contractors and a local Lender to develop these sites. These diverse site challenges shall hopefully result in several final designs, which have preliminary planning review, preliminary building review, and cost estimates. The goal of the studio is to not only showcase the creative abilities of the students, but provide fully vetted ADU design options for the public to use. This evening the students will be presenting as in teams of three, each presenting one ADU design each. We are asking Commission to provide feedback and ask questions to help guide the final designs. The questions the students should be answering with this presentation are as followings: 1. How does this ADU design respond to the client(s) program? 2. What were some of the design challenges with this site and UDC requirements? 3. Highlight 3-5 attributes that make this an exceptional dwelling? 4. How will this ADU design be able to be used throughout Bozeman by other interested residents? ATTACHMENTS: None. 137
