Lawson - Parking on 900 South GrandFrom:Agenda To:Brenda Sweeney Subject:FW: Petition/ Letter Date:Thursday, September 13, 2018 1:34:03 PM -----Original Message----- From: Cameron Lawson [mailto:photos@cameronlawson.com] Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2018 11:34 AM To: Robin Crough <RCrough@BOZEMAN.NET> Subject: Petition/ Letter Hello Robin, I just sent you two images. Image 1 is a Petition signed by the majority of residents on 900 South Grand. Image 2 includes two notes: a) Jim Good, a retired school teacher living on 900 South Grand, was tired of the parking problem. He attended City Commission meetings and nothing happened. Three years ago, he decided to type a note and place it on all the parked cars on the street. b) The hand written note was produced by an MSU student, who would frequently park in front of my home. He thought I wrote the letter. The following day after Jim Good left his note on the cars, I found the hand written note in my mail box. Disturbing and I don’t feel like the residents of 900 South Grand should deal with this. Please present all this information to the City Commission. If it can be archived, please do so. Thank you for your time. Been busy launching a new website and working out the kinks. Please post this to the City Commission - hopefully this will be archived. • A petition has been signed by the residents of 900 South Grand block with the majority in favor of Residential Parking Permit Only. This was given to Ed Meece. • Last year Bozeman experienced a lot of snow. Because all the cars, the plows weren’t able to plow near the curb. Result: cars parked further away from the curb, which made the problem worse. At one point, the distance from car door to car door was 12’. A fire truck is 10’. Thiswould allow (at most) 2’ for EMS/firefighters to work. If there was an emergency, it would be difficult to work on the street. (I have images and video of the measurement). This is a public safety hazard. • I have many images taken from Grand that are time stamped. It clearly shows the parking issue. • Drivers that are unable to park on one side of the street (usually the West side), will do U-turns on Harrison and Cleveland to wrap back around to park on the East side of street. • 900 South Grand experiences abandoned vehicles and trailers, this is especially true during MSU college breaks. • Occasionally (not often) people that park on Grand, dump their floor mats on the street, as they clean their car (beer cans, cigarette butts, candy wrappers etc.) are left behind. The last commission meeting I attended, Ed Meece was asked how many times he visits a street to make a decision on a parking plan. He said 1-2x and this number was arbitrary. Maybe this is enough data to make a good decision. Jim Good, a resident on Grand, tried to get this street Permit Only 4 years ago and nothing happened. During this time, MSU has increased enrollment, which means more cars. Finally, I spoke to the parking division at MSU. They feel their parking rates are fair, and I would agree. I was told the cost of parking at the Stadium lot is $0.16 per day, and the lot is usually half empty. This information was shared with Chuck Winn, Ed Meece, Chris Mehl and JeffKrauss in the past. I’m glad this issue is being revisited and hopefully some action is taken. I’ve attached some photos. The top image was taken today (09-12-18 at 11:00am) and I counted 18 cars on 900 South Grand. The next image down, was taken on the September 11, 2018. Other images were taken throughout the winter. If you need more images, I have around 50 on file. In a moment, I will send you a petition. This should also be archived. 900 South Grand has a real parking problem. I hope the City Commission can include 900 South Grand into the Residential Parking Permit Only district. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Cam Cameron Lawson Photographycell#: 406.585.7177photos@cameronlawson.com
