N. Bozeman was constructed approximately 1877, north of Main St. within the I Block. The house was designed in a simple vernacular style with Greek Revival elements. Like many properties of the time period the house utilized wallpaper as a wall finish. The widespread and availability of wallpaper at the time of construction allowed ordinary middle-class Americans to cover large rooms with variety of types and designs. The evidence of the historical wallpaper exists in high-quality pieces from various parts of the house. Style designs reflect their era as well as how property owners interpreted the use of a room. Subsequent additions have been made to rear over the course of the properties history. As a result a wallpaper sample was obtained from the entrance hallway (A-1), likely one of the original portions of the house. A square sample was removed from the hallway hall that is reflected on the Photo Key Map, approximately 1’ x 1’. Beneath the sample the wall was finished in irregular flat sawn horizontal boards, likely much of the interior wall of the original house were finished in this way and later finished over with lath and plaster. Sample Description The wallpaper sample contained three distinct paper layers and a bottom muslin fabric, the top layer (A-2) shows a geometric motif designed in a diaper pattern with a floral border and white ground. This layer is likely a mid-20th century pattern, popular 1940-1960. The mid layer was a thin piece that was not easily recovered, as is typical of wallpaper analysis. It appears in A-3 in the highlighted section. The sample illustrates a gilded border pattern with a brown ground. The third layer or bottom layer (A-3) was first to be hung and was successfully salvaged and illustrates a potentially Anglo- Japanese style of wallpaper that was popular 1880-1900 in America. The use of geometric shapes, sunflower motifs with leaves and stalk illustrate this style. A similar style of wallpaper (A-6) from www.historicnewengland.org1 archive illustrates the Anglo-Japanese style dated 1880-1890. Additional Samples A-4 and A-5 were both located within the Arnie & Jacob Residence, A-4 utilizes a plotted plant motif with a beige ground and border. A-5 is exposed behind lath strips where the plaster has been removed on the second floor room 202. A-5 illustrates that much of the original form of the house interior was finished with horizontal board planks and then covered with wallpaper. At a later date the interior was finished with lath and plaster. As a result of A-5 being covered for a likely significant period pf time the paper is vibrant in color.
