Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This building is a two-story vernacular residence from the early twentieth century, wood-framed and displaying an L-
gable formation. The foundation is concrete. Exterior walls are clad with asbestos shingles (non-original), and the roof
is surfaced with asphalt shingles. Windows are a mix of historic 1/1 double-hung units and modern casements. The
primary(south) elevation is symmetrical, and is definied by an open, gable-roofed front porch supported by heavy,
square wood posts. A shed-roofed addition exists in the northwestern ell of the building; it may be a non-historic
addition, or a reconfigured former porch area. The cladding and fenestration of the addition are non-historic.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
In 1910, Theodore and Josephine Norman deeded to Joseph Ellickson the 2'/-acre parcel on which the house at 2102
N. Rouse stands. It seems likely that Ellickson built a house at the site immediately thereafter. Information about
Joseph Ellickson and his wife Nellie is unavailable at this time. County records reveal that they deeded the small rural
parcel to Nelson Lundwall in 1910, but they continued to live at this location through about 1917.
Lundwall sold the small tract to M.J. and Lena Smullen in 1918, and they retained ownership for four years. The City of
Bozeman held possession of the house and lot for two years from 1922 to 1924 (for unknown reasons).
When Dora Griffin purchased the property from the city in 1924, that began a long period lasting into the modern era
during which members of the Griffin family owned the house. It passed from Dora Griffin to Bessie and Guy Griffin and
then to Paul and Vaide Griffin (in 1972).

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a representative example of a vernacular home from the early twentieth century. Houses of this scale
and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century American towns, and it is the
characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhood. This portion of the community was
home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural
products--and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their
families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of
the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth
for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from
proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines.
This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture,
as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however,
suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity(as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is
no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the National Register of
Historic Places.
INTEGRITY(location,design, setting,materials,workmanship,feeling,association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic
alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include altered exterior siding and fenestration, as well as a
structural addition to the northwestern ell of the building.
