Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a large industrial building consisting of multiple parts. The historic core of the building consists of a rectangular
mass constructed of soft, bearing brick, laid in a common bond. This portion of the building rests on a rubblestone
foundation, and has a gable roof surfaced with asphalt. Only the east elevation of this mass remains visible; this
elevation includes brick pilasters and two small openings infilled with plywood.
The original building mass was supplemented by later additions (probably all historic) to the north, south, and west.
Together, these additions enveloped three sides of the original building and dwarfed it in size. All of the additions were
apparently metal-framed, manufactured building components, with corrugated metal walls and corrugated metal shed
roofs. The south addition included office space, and featured fixed-light, metal-framed windows and full-light metal
person doors. Other additions served industrial purposes, and included large metal-clad industrial doors. A railroad
spur ran along the north end of the additions, providing a cargo loading area.
All of the metal-framed additions to the building were undergoing demolition at the time of this inventory.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
This is the remnant of the Bozeman Milling Company's elevator and mill. The building and its numerous add-ons
mostly served as warehouses throughout the plant's existence.
Bozeman Milling Company's complex probably was built in 1892, the year in which the company purchased a full city
block in the Imes Addition immediately west of Rouse Avenue. RTI did not research the company, but secondary
sources identify its owner as E.B. Lamme and the business as the chief competitor of the Story Mill, less than 1 mile to
the northeast.
After the Story Mill was destroyed by fire in 1901, Thomas Byron Story merged his operation with that of Lamme's
Bozeman Milling. He soon began to rebuild his mill at the mouth of Bridger Canyon, taking the milling equipment from
the North Rouse Avenue plant. In 1904, the rebuilt Story (lower) Mill was back on-line, the North Rouse Avenue
(upper) mill had been converted to a cereal mill, and Story bought out the founder's interests in Bozeman Milling.
In 1904, the North Rouse plant consisted of an elevator and grain bins, a mill, two warehouses, and an office. One of
the two warehouses was separated from the mill and elevator complex and stood adjacent to Rouse Avenue. It is the
brick building that still stands at the east edge of the existing complex.
During the following 15 years, Bozeman Milling's business grew considerably, but the plant on Rouse Avenue
continued to be a relatively small part of the total operation. The only addition to the complex between 1904 and 1912
was a third warehouse built at the west edge of the brick warehouse mentioned above. That third warehouse
connected the brick structure directly with the elevator/mill/warehouse grouping to the west. The free-standing office
south of the mill complex had been converted to a dwelling.
In 1919, the Montana Flour Mills Company purchased all of Bozeman Milling's assets in the Gallatin Valley. The new
company continued to operate the grain elevator and cereal mill on North Rouse. The east-west, elongated form of the
complex remained virtually unchanged through the 1920s. At some unknown date prior to 1943, however, a long
section consisting of two warehouses was added to the north side of the plant, where a Northern Pacific spur line had
once passed. This section remains standing today at the north edge of the remnant complex.
In 1967, Montana Flour Mills sold its statewide operation to Conagra, and the latter company closed the upper and
lower plants, including this building complex. There is no readily available information about what uses the plant may
have served since closure.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a large, surviving remnant of the former Montana Flour Mills complex, formerly one of the largest
agricultural processing facilities in the city of Bozeman. The Flour Mills site is currently in the process of being heavily
redeveloped, and these actions are greatly impacting the integrity of the site. In addition, as of this writing, this building
is undergoing partial demolition, and the majority of the structure is expected to be removed entirely. For these
reasons, this building is not eligible for listing in the National Regiister of Historic Places due to a lack of integrity.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location. Integrity of setting has been destroyed by the removal or redevelopment of
the remaining buildings of the Flour Mills complex. Much of this building is now undergoing demolition, and it is
expected that remaining aspects of integrity will be diminished or lost by this action.
