Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This site consists of approximately 10 buildings and a variety of small-scale features, as briefly outlined below.
The operational center of the site is the Office &Shop building (MDT Building#02), which is at the southeastern corner
of the property. The building apparently dates from the late 1930s, with numerous small additions through the 1970s;
the additions are compatible in design. Most of the building is wood-framed, though the western end has steel framing;
the exterior is clad with corrugated metal. The foundation is concrete, and there is a partial basement. The primary
mass of the building is 1 1/2 stories in height; the western wing is one story high. A complex gable roof tops the
structure; it is also surfaced with corrugated metal. Most windows are wood-framed, 1/1 double-hung units in historic
openings. Large, metal overhead garage doors are present on the west wing.
The southwestern corner of the site is anchored by the Stores Building (MDT Building#03), which is a 12-bay garage
structure dating from the late 1930s. It is wood-framed, with a gable roof and concrete foundation. Exterior wall and
roof cladding is corrugated metal. As constructed, the building originally had a series of paired, hinged garage doors
occupying much of its east elevation. These have largely been replaced with infill and modern overhead doors.
Four other garage buildings, dating from the 1950s and 1960s, also exist at the site. MDT Building#6 is immediately
north of the Stores Building, while Buildings#05, 07, and 15 are in a row north of the Office building. All are
manufactured structures, metal framed with gable roofs and metal exterior cladding. Metal overhead garage doors are
present in all. Buildings 07 and 15 were connected by a small amount of modern construction in 1985.
Four smaller, ancillary buildings (probably from the 1950s and early 1960s) exist in a row along the west property line of
the site. From south to north, they are: the Sand House (Building#16); Road Salt Storage (#14); Stake Storage (#13),
and Tool Storage (#08). All are relatively small, gabled structures except for the Sand House, which is a large
manufactured metal building with a gambrel cross-section.
The newest building at the site is the Engineering Office (Building#17), a gable-roofed, modular structure with exterior
wood cladding. It is immediately north of the Office Building, and was reportedly moved to the site in the mid-1980s.
Other features at the site include fueling facilities and fuel storage tanks, located at the north end of the western row of
buildings. These are modern replacements for earlier fuel facilities.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
Until 1934, this land was an undeveloped part of the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, and was under the ownership of the
Gallatin County Fair Board. That October, the Fair Board leased the property to the Montana State Highway
Commission, and the first buildings were probably built at the site soon after. The construction date of the first buildings
at this location is unconfirmed, although an unattributed plaque in the current office building may be associated with the
building's construction; it bears a date of 1938. Plans for the current office building and at least one of the ancillary
structures (apparently, the current Stores Building) were prepared by B.J. Ornburn, a Montana Department of Highways
employee whose title was"Bridge Design Engineer." These plans show the Stores Building in its approximate current
configuration (an unheated, 12-stall garage), but show only the north-south axis of the office building, without its later
additions to the east and west.
A Montana State Highway Commission map of the site, dated 1952, shows additional improvements at the site. The
first western extension of the office building had been completed by that time, and a small "Lab & Engineers Office"
(since razed) stood just to the north. A paint building (still extant) was next in line, followed by a newly-completed 5-
stall heated garage. Other development on the property included loading ramps and various fuel storage tanks. As
today, the northern end of the property was largely reserved for material storage.
Buildings constructed later in the 1950s and in the early 1960s largely filled out the current shop complex. A new six-
stall garage was built just north of the original 12-stall building, and small tool and equipment storage sheds appeared
along the western property line. The last major building to be constructed at the site was a six-stall garage, built in
1968 to the north of the five-stall structure. (The six-stall and five-stall garages were later joined by new construction.)
Most of the buildings added to the site during the 1950s and 1960s were factory-manufactured metal structures.
Small additions were also built onto the main office building from the 1950s to the 1970s, including a small extension to
the east, and two additioins to the western wing. Fueling and fuel storage facilities were also improved during that time.
Though it has been expanded over the years, the current facility continues to serve the Montana Department of
Transportation, filling the same functions for which it was designed and built over sixty years ago.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
For nearly 70 years, the complex of buildings has housed the Bozeman offices, repair shops, and storage facilities for
the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its predecessor agencies. As such, the site has played a central
role in the history of twentieth-century highway development and maintenance in the Gallatin Valley area. The
buildings erected here are reflective of this role, as well; utilitarian in nature but complementary in design, they clearly
reflect the specialized mission of the property.
Though a comprehensive inventory of historic MDT shops buildings has not been undertaken, it is likely that the
Bozeman complex is among the larger and better-preserved groupings of historic highway maintenance buildings
surviving in the state. Despite some modern additions to the property, the site continues to strongly evoke its historic
appearance and continuous function. For these reasons, the site is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places,
significant under criteria "a" and "c."
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
The site retains integrity of location, setting, feeling, and association. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished
through the addition of a small number of ancillary buildings at the site since the 1950s -- primarily garage#15 and
office building#17. Minor changes to the fenestration pattern of some of the older buildings has also taken place, but
all continue to evoke their historic appearance.
