The windows are a mixture of fixed and casement units; all are non-historic, and are in non-historic openings. The enclosed front porch has a shed roof; the porch may or may not be original. The foundation is concrete. On the rear of the house is a small, non-historic gable-roofed addition. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 816 North Rouse Ave. Site Number: 24 GA 1727 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page The house at this location was built in 1934-1935 while R.G. Gallup owned the property. Gallup, also responsible for building 802 N. Rouse a few years earlier, must have been either a builder or developer. He never resided at the two houses in this block that he owned, but instead apparently quickly sold them under contracts for deeds. The first family to occupy 816 N. Rouse was that of James and Cora Crawley. They moved in at house completion, and received the deed to the property in 1939. James Crawley worked in a variety of jobs for the Barer Fur Company, including yardman, partsman, laborer, and mechanic. The Crawleys retained ownership until 1946, but by at least 1944 they had moved to another place. Dorothy Sheppard owned the house between 1946 and 1956. She was a developer in her own right, apparently having built houses on the two lots immediately to the south (808 and 810 N. Rouse) in about 1946. She must have turned around and sold the house at 816 shortly after acquiring it, again selling the property under a contract for deed. The purchaser was Eugene Menzel. He and his wife Marjorie lived at the house until they sold it in 1957. Eugene Menzel worked as a driver and mechanic for three different companies during that time, while Marjorie Menzel was an assistant seed analyst for the Montana Grain Inspection Laboratory. Their son Donald resided with them briefly in the mid-1950s when he was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Teddy and Lila Pinkerton were the next owners of the house at 816 N. Rouse. They retained ownership until early 1972. Teddy Pinkerton worked as a laborer for the City Street Department. INFORMATION SOURCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY ❑ See Additional Information Page R.L. Polk & Company. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhoods. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a greatly diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been greatly diminished by non- historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include exterior siding of non-historic pattern and materials, non-historic windows in an altered fenestration pattern, and a non-historic rear addition.
