Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This is a one-story, rectangular, vernacular residence of wood-frame construction. The gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles; eaves are shallow. The exterior is sided with wide lap siding and has single and paired 1/1 double- hung windows. The windows appear to be historic, but the siding is likely not original. The front entry is under a gable- roofed overdoor with exposed rafter tips and Craftsman-style bracketing. The small wood porch beneath the overdoor is modern, as is the door itself. The foundation is concrete. Originally, this house was an architectural twin of the building at 810 North Rouse, although remodelings have obliterated much of that historic resemblance. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 =rty Name: 808 North Rouse Ave. Site Number: 24 GA 1725 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page In the fall of 1945, Dorothy Sheppard acquired the house at 802 N. Rouse and the four city lots on which it stood. As a developer, her intention was to divide the parcel into three parts, with 802 standing on the southernmost piece. She apparently immediately contracted to have houses built on the remaining two parts. These are the two houses that now stand at 808 and 810 N. Rouse. When built, they were virtually identical. In October 1946, Marie Jensen, Carl Jensen, and Elizabeth Swedberg acquired the middle parcel and 808 N. Montana. All three were presumably members of the same Jensen family. Raymond and Mary Jensen resided there briefly, but soon the family rented the property to others. Family members retained ownership at least until 1966 and perhaps later. Renters during the 1950s and early 1960s included Lee Hieman (clerk at Penneys), William and Myrtle Ramsey (plumber with Budd Plumbing and Heating), and Bror and Rose Mary Johnson (Laundromat work). Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhood. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products--and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include exterior siding and the addition of a modern front porch.
