As a neighbor of BHS I witness everyday safety issues for students, staff, faculty and neighbors in the area. Ultimately I feel that continuing to push the footprint of the high school from main street further north into a residential neighborhood is a matter of public safety and one that needs to be addressed by the city. 11th and 15th streets are not adequate to handle the type of vehicular and pedestrian traffic that the school district is demanding. I witness everyday a volume of traffic not suitable to a residential neighborhood. Young students weaving in and out of traffic to cross the street, first time drivers navigating split-second situations that they are not necessarily equipped to handle, frustration from parents who cannot drop their kids off at a point that is convenient to them, speeding cars, lack of pedestrian crossings, inadequate parking and the multiple-times-a-year sound of a screeching car before impact along 15th. Moving the drop-off area from main street to 15th and Ruth Tiebolt will just compound these problems. Several parents have relayed to me that they will not go out of their way, off of main street, to use this new drop off. It is not convenient, it is not well thought out, and it does not address how parents and students live their lives. There is limited street-parking as-is for those of us who live in the neighborhood. The new stadium is so far away from existing parking and access, presumably leaving the neighborhood residents to provide what the school board opted out of, safe parking and circulation. How is this not a public safety issue? I can only imagine the amount of traffic every weekend during football, soccer and lacrosse seasons since this will be the stadium for both high schools. This neighborhood is just not equipped to handle this. While this problem started with the 2011 addition, it does not have to be perpetuated. Public safety can be a priority for both the school board and the city. If we don't value the safety of our students and respect our local residents, what lessons are we teaching our future citizens?
