Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This is a single-story building, vernacular in design and with an overall rectangular plan. The building rests on a concrete foundation (probably not original). Exterior walls are sided with shiplap. Windows are wood-framed, a mixture of fixed-light and double-hung units; at least some are non-original, and in non-original openings. The primary (east) elevation is defined by a long, shed-roofed, open front porch, supported by square wood posts and including a non- historic wood balustrade. The entry door here is historic, featuring an art glass half-light window above paneled wood. The building has a side-gable roof, surfaced with asphalt shingles. Historic fishscale wood shingles survive in the gable ends of the walls. A large, gabled addition (probably non-historic) extends to the west from the building's rear elevation. It is largely compatible in design and materials, and is only minimally visible from the front of the building. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 801 North Rouse Site Number: 24 GA 1723 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page In 1920, the Standard Construction Company purchased two entire blocks in the Imes Addition west of Rouse Avenue (800 block). This marked the company's move from its former place of business in the Golden Rule Block to a new yard, shop, and warehouse. Initially marketing itself as a concrete contractor specializing in "sewer, water works, reinforced concrete," Standard Construction later expanded its business to include road construction and then general contracting with available engineering staff. It maintained its warehouse on North Rouse until the early 1950s. In 1935, it sold two city lots in the southeast corner of its large parcel to Myron Stevens. It is there that 801 N. Rouse stands. Stevens was almost certainly responsible for the house's construction. He actually must have begun work a few years previous because the Bozeman City Directory lists him at that address first in 1933. Stevens was a truck driver and mechanic. He and his wife Irene resided at the house until mid-1938 when they sold the property. The next owners were Jack and Bernice Prather. They resided at the house for the four years that they owned it. At that time, Jack Prather was a baker for the Bon Ton Bakery. Margaret and Fred Maggard were the next owner/occupants, also holding the house for four years. During that time, Fred Maggard worked as a truck driver. When Orville and Loretta Bridgewater purchased the house in 1946, the event marked the beginning of a decades-long ownership and occupation by the Bridgewater family which continues to the present. Early on, Orville Bridgewater worked as a plant man for Pictsweet Foods, but then obtained employment with the Montana Flour Mills Company. He worked and supervised operations at the company's elevator, presumably the one just five blocks north on Rouse Avenue. Orville Bridgewater died only recently, and his daughter currently resides at 801 N. Rouse. INFORMATION SOURCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY ❑ See Additional Information Page R.L. Polk& Company. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhood. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area-- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include the addition of non-historic windows in an altered fenestration pattern, and the construction of a large rear addition to the house.
