Source of Information:
Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This building is a 1 1/2-story, wood-framed residence of vernacular design. The building's outward appearance
suggests the 1940s or 1950s, and it was either built or heavily remodeled about that time; the details described here all
date from that period.
The building rests on a concrete foundation. Walls are clad with wide-lap siding, and the gable roof is surfaced with
asphalt shingles. The north half of the primary(east) elevation projects outward, providing a fully-enclosed entry area.
There is a large, exterior brick chimney on this wall. Windows are wood-framed, a mixture of fixed-light and casement
units. There are two dormers on the building: a single-bay, hipped roof dormer on the south, and a larger, gable-roofed
dormer to the north. The northern dormer probably postdates the southern one. There is an open, gabled porch at the
west end of the north elevation, and a non-historic shed-roofed carport at the rear of the building.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
Stephen and Lulu Newman built the house at 621 N. Rouse in 1895. They immediately sold it to Sarah Mileham, who
acquired the adjacent four lots in 1896. Mileham, a widow, resided at the house with two male relatives, presumably
sons. Harvey Mileham worked as a teamster and Ellery Mileham as a machinist.
Sarah Mileham sold the house and six lots at this location to another widow, Jerusha Littlefield, in 1900. Jerusha held
the property for eight years. During that time, two other Littlefields, presumably sons, lived there as well. John
Littlefield worked as a laborer and prospector, while Abner Littlefield was employed as a clerk at W.D. Farmer's bowling
alley and the Gallatin Drug Company.
Marvin Farmer purchased the property from Littlefield in June 1908, and just 13 short months later sold it. While
residing briefly at 621 N. Rouse, Farmer was a printer for the Chronicle Publishing Company.
Charlie and Margaret Howard were the next owners and, with minor exception, retained title to the house and adjacent
lots until 1943. Immediately prior to purchasing 621 N. Rouse, Charlie Howard had rented another house on North
Rouse Avenue, in the next block to the south. During his residence on the street, a period which presumably accounts
for most of his adult life, he worked as a laborer(at one time for the Bozeman Street Department), teamster(for a time
at the Kenyon-Noble Lumber Company), and a farmer.
Apparently via a contract for deed, Lonzo and Rose Garren purchased 621 N. Rouse in 1943. They owned the
property for the following 23 years. At least part of that time, Loren Garren worked as a conductor, possibly for the
Northern Pacific Railway. The Garren family lived at the house on North Rouse almost continuously until about 1960.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
While this building apparently dates from the beginning of the twentieth century, its current appearance reflects a 1950
or even 1960s total remodel. When viewed as such, the house is not a representation of late nineteenth and early
twentieth century residential building in the northeast Bozeman neighborhood, but instead is reflective of the practice of
enlarging and remodeling older homes to serve modern needs. Because the alterations have been so extensive, this
building cannot contribute to the proposed North Rouse Avenue Historic District.
INTEGRITY(location,design, setting,materials, workmanship,feeling,association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
If indeed this is the house that was first built on the lot in 1895, it has lost integrity in all respects except location and
setting. The only late nineteenth century architectural feature that might survive on the building's exterior is the hipped
dormer.
