Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a one-story, L-shaped, vernacular, wood-frame residence. The building includes an original rectangular side-
gable mass at the front(east), and a larger gabled addition to the rear. Roof surfaces are covered with asphalt
shingles. The exterior walls are sided with stucco (non-original, but historic) and windows are either sliding or double-
hung units. Windows appear to be original. A shed-roofed front porch (historic) is supported by square wood posts.
The foundation is covered with bricks and concrete (historic, but non-original). The partial basement has window wells.
The rear addition has an asymmetrical gable roof and is sided with stucco. There is also a carport which is under an
attached shed roof, on the north side of the house and in front of the garage.
The garage stands northwest of the house. It has a gable roof and was once separate from the house, but now is
connected by the rear addition.
Finally, there is a 6 x 8-foot shed on the property. The tax assessor estimates the date of the shed as 1970.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
This house was built sometime between 1912 and 1927, possibly in 1923. Prior to the latter date, W.B. Burket owned
the two lots on which the house stands. Burket was a partner in the firm Widener& Burket, which specialized in real
estate, insurance, and loans. While it is possible that Burket had a house built at this location after he purchased the
two lots in 1908, it seems more likely that the subsequent owner was responsible for the house's construction.
In 1923, Almon Davison purchased the property. A single man, he lived at 613 N. Rouse until 1940. During that time,
he worked as a ticket agent and clerk for the Northern Pacific Railway.
The next owners for any significant period of time were William and Blanche Davis. They purchased the house in 1943.
Initially, they lived there themselves while William Davis worked as a driver, but, by the late 1940s, they rented the
house to others. The Davises sold out in early 1950.
The Roy and Margaret Knodel apparently rented 613 N. Rouse from the Davises beginning at least as early as 1947.
They became the next owners in 1950, and kept the house for many, many years. Roy Knodel was a mechanic for
Owenhouse Hardware. Members of the Knodel family still own the property today.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a representative example of a small, largely vernacular home from the late nineteenth/early twentieth
century. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century
American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhood. This
portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing
and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served
blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found
elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern
neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway
lines.
This house, therefore, is significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as
for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building retains a high level of
historic integrity, although no site-specific historical significance has been attributed to the house. This building is a
contributing resource to a proposed North Rouse Avenue Historic District.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by the
construction of a non-historic addition to the rear of the building. The historic street elevation, however, remains intact.
