Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a 1 1/4-story, rectangular, vernacular residence of wood-frame construction. The gable roof is covered with
asphalt shingles. Eaves are shallow, and include partial returns on the primary(east) fagade. The exterior is sided with
asbestos shingles, and the windows include fixed, sliding, and casement units; the cladding and windows all appear to
be non-original, but may date from the historic period. The open porch has a shed roof, turned wood posts, and a
concrete deck. The foundation is rubblestone. There is a long addition (possibly non-historic) on the rear(west) side of
the building. It is topped by a hip roof and sided with asbestos shingles. The addition has a concrete foundation. A
two-stall garage occupies at the west end of that addition, with its overhead doors in the south wall. There is also a
smaller addition on the house's north side. It is topped by a shed roof.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
The house at this location was built at some unknown date between 1904 and 1912. Jeremiah Sawyer was the owner
at that time, and apparently was responsible for the building's construction. Sawyer was a long-time Rouse Avenue
resident and property owner. He and other members of the Sawyer family (Alson and Joseph) owned lots in the 300-
600 blocks of North Rouse in the early 1900s, through the late 1920s in some instances. They resided at 314 and 404
N. Rouse (modern addresses)just after the turn of the twentieth century, during which time the city directories noted
they worked as laborers. In fact, it is possible that they built houses in the neighborhood at that time, and conceivably
the one at 601 N. Rouse was one of those that they built. Jeremiah and his presumed brother Alson held the five lots
on which the house at 601 N. Rouse stood until 1936. Renters between the late 1920s and mid-1930s included
George and Gladys Chesnut(laborer), Elva and Grace Sallee, and Hiram and Maime Doherty (laborer and mechanic
for the Standard Construction Company).
Frederick Simpson purchased the lots and house in 1936 for$1800. During his ownership, to 1945, renters included
the Doherty family mentioned previously and Nellie Tucker.
In next owners to retain possession for any significant period of time were Hazel and William Freel. He worked as a
gas station attendant. By early 1953, it appears that either or both of the Freels died and willed their home to the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The church sold the house (then standing on a much smaller land parcel
than it had until the mid-1940s) to William and Violet Stutsman. The Stutsmans rented it to Wayne and Avis Martin
(automobile service). In 1958, Francis and Kay Barnett bought the house and moved in. They lived there at least into
the early 1960s. During that time, Francis Barnett worked as a horticulturalist for Montana State College.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a representative example of a small, largely vernacular home from the late nineteenth/early twentieth
century. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century
American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhoods. This
portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing
and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served
blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found
elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern
neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway
lines.
This house, therefore, is significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as
for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building retains an acceptable
level of historic integrity, although no site-specific historical significance has been attributed to the house. This building
is a contributing resource to a proposed North Rouse Avenue Historic District.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic
alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include non-original exterior siding and windows, as well as a large
addition on the rear of the house. The primary fagade of the building remains evocative of its original form, however,
with its open front porch and partial gable returns in the eaves.
