Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This building is comprised of two separate buildings that combined to form an L-shaped structure. Originally constructed as a church, with probable attached residence, the building now houses multiple apartments. The east portion--the former church--is a one-story, rectangular, wood-frame structure. The gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles; and the rafter tips are exposed. The west portion of the house fronts on East Peach Street and is a 1'/z-story, rectangular, wood-frame structure. The gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles. The floor level is set higher than in the east portion. This building section stands over a basement with windows. Both portions are covered with drop siding, and have a variety of windows, including double-hung 1/1, fixed plate, casement, and sliding. The fenestration pattern appears to be largely historic. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 539 North Rouse Ave. Site Number: 24 GA 1712 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page In 1935, D. A. Cross purchased the vacant, 85 x 140-foot lot at 539 N. Rouse. In the following year, the Church of God built a church there, and moved into it from their former location at 312 E. Main. Under the guidance of pastor Rev. George Burton, the Church of God remained at their new building until the mid-1940s. By 1947, the Assembly of God Church had taken over the church building at 539 N. Rouse. That congregation remained there until 1958, the last year in which the building was used as a church. While the Assembly of God occupied the building, it employed a series of pastors including Earl Ayres, Bert Harrison, and Alf Redmond. Some of those pastors and their families lived in an apartment at the church. In October of 1958, the First Assembly of God Church sold the property to Ruby Price. Price apparently converted the former church building to two apartments. In 1959, Don Strang, a construction worker, and James Barnes, a cook at Colonel's Drive Inn, rented the apartments. At some unknown date, but certainly by 1963, Price added another building to the rear of the church, making a total of four apartments. As a small, multi-unit apartment complex, the building is typical of many in the northeastern neighborhoods of Bozeman, which was traditionally inhabited by mostly blue-collar and lower-income residents. This building, therefore, is significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and the northeastern residential neighborhood. The building retains a high level of historic integrity, although no site-specific historical significance has been attributed to the house. This building is a contributing resource to a proposed North Rouse Avenue Historic District. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building has been enlarged at least once during its history, but additions appear to date from the historic period. No substantive modern changes are apparent on the building's exterior. Thus, the building appears to retain all seven aspects of National Register integrity.
