Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a two-story ranch style residence of wood-frame construction. The building consists of a rectangular, single-
story house, possibly of modular construction, atop a large, partially-daylight basement. The daylight portion of the
basement extends eastward from the upper story mass. That area, now enclosed, may have once been a garage.
The house's low pitch gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles. The exterior is sided with wide lap siding. The
windows are double-hung 1/1 and fixed plate. On the east side of the second floor is a gable-roofed open porch with
wooden posts. The foundation is concrete.
A shed on the property dates to 1973.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
The Bozeman City Directories indicate that the house at 421 N. Rouse was moved to this location in about 1960.
Owners Walter L. and Pearl Wortman had purchased the lot in 1952, but did not build on it(or at least complete
construction) until late 1959 or 1960. At one time, Walter Wortman worked as the deputy county sheriff.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a vernacular, mid-twentieth century house of largely vernacular design. It was constructed well after
most of the other homes in the area, and represents the practice of"infilling"formerly vacant lots with new construction.
It is not an unusual or quality example of its architectural type.
The house has no known site-specific historical associations, and its integrity is somewhat diminished by probable
alterations to the building's lower level. For these reasons, it is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic
Places.
INTEGRITY(location,design, setting,materials,workmanship, feeling,association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
In general, most of the building appears to retain all seven aspects of National Register integrity. The probable
enclosure of the former garage area, however, has diminished the building's integrity of design.
