Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This is a 1-story, vernacular residence of wood-frame construction. The main body of the house is rectangular. The T- gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles, and has an interior brick chimney. The house is sided with asbestos shingles (non-historic), and has a combination of double-hung 1/1, sliding, and large fixed windows. Most windows are replacement units in historic openings, although the large front window is a non-historic opening. The front entry is at an enclosed, shed-roofed porch, sided similarly to the remainder of the house. The foundation is concrete, probably not original. On the rear of the house is a shed-roofed porch. Also, there is an attached garage on the northeast side of the main building. It has a shed roof, wide-lap siding, and out-swinging wood doors. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 404 North Rouse Site Number: 24 GA 1697 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page The house at this address was built at some unknown date prior to 1906. In that year, Andrew M. Snell purchased the 100 x 234-foot lot on which the house stands for$500, indicating that a house was there at that time. The seller, Jeremiah Sawyer, regained ownership of the property in 1911. He and Alson Sawyer, possibly a brother, owned the house and most of the large lot until 1934. Available records are unclear about whether or not the Sawyers ever resided in the house. By 1927, Elva and Grace Salee resided at 404 N. Rouse as renters. Elva Sallee was a laborer at the time. Other renters during the Sawyer ownership were Glen and Dorothy Hardy and Fred and Genevieve Jenson. Lester W. King purchased the house in 1934, and he and his wife Sarah resided there until 1943 when they sold it. Lester was variously employed as a stationary fireman and laborer while living on N. Rouse. Evelyn and Vern Shipman were the next owner-occupants. When they acquired the house, the accompanying lot had been reduced to a 50 x 234-foot parcel. Vern Shipman worked as a maintenance engineer for the Bozeman Hotel (just four blocks to the south) and later as a driver for Gallatin Sand and Gravel. He and his wife sold the house in 1945 to Bess Griffin. Griffin may not have occupied the house; a renter is listed in the city directory for 404 N. Rouse during the late 1950s when she still held the property. Renter Joseph McLaughlin was a welder at the Midwest Welding and Machine Shop, located just three blocks to the south. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhoods. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products -- and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include exterior siding of non-historic pattern and materials, and non-historic windows in an altered fenestration pattern. In addition, the enclosed front porch may not be original.
