Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This is a one-story, irregularly-shaped residence of vernacular style. It is of wood-frame construction and is covered with wide-lap siding. The windows are primarily single and paired double-hung 1/1 units, in historic openings. The building stands under a complex roof covered with asphalt shingles. The roofline reflects a history of additions to the building, which was originally a narrow, front-gable rectangular block. An addition to the north side of the building caused the original roofline to become asymmetrical. A newer gable addition exists to the rear(west), displaying a gentler roof slope. A still-later hip-roofed addition is on the southwestern corner of the building; this addition contains six-light wood-framed windows. The building is atop a concrete foundation. There are two sheds at the rear of the lot. These are a 9 x 9-foot metal shed reportedly dating to 1965 and a 9 x 10- foot metal shed dating to 1970. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 315 North Rouse Ave. Site Number: 24 GA 1692 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page In March 1924, George Miller acquired the parcel of land at this location from Gallatin County. The county had earlier received title when the previous owner failed to pay back taxes owed. Miller built the house on the then vacant lot, and resided there for 10 years. In 1934, he deeded the property to Gallatin County, but continued to reside there until at least 1942. In 1944, Frank G. Slaughter purchased the house for$350, holding it for just two years. As an investor rather than an occupant, he owned this and other properties in the neighborhood both before and immediately following World War ll. Jacob Zilliox , a grader operator for the county, rented the house in the mid-1940s from Slaughter. After a short occupation by other renters, Leander and Mary Theisen, 315 N. Rouse was occupied by members of the Brown family, first by Gerald in 1950 and then by Mabel, presumably his mother, into the early 1960s. Mrs. Brown, a widow like so many of the occupants of this street during the historic period, was employed as a sewer at City Dye Works. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhoods. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area-- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include exterior siding of non-historic pattern and materials, and non-historic windows. Also, additions of unknown age exist on the building's north, south and west elevations.
