Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This is a 1'/-story, rectangular, vernacular residence of wood-frame construction. Exterior walls are clad with wide-lap siding of a Masonite-like material (non-historic). The gable roof is covered with galvanized corrugated steel, and has an interior chimney made of brick. Most windows are 1/1 double-hung units in historic openings; smaller 1-light and 3-light fixed windows exist on the north elevation. The foundation is concrete; it may not be original to the house. A 8 x 10-foot metal shed was added to the site in about 1980. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 314 North Rouse Ave. Site Number: 24 GA 1691 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page The house at this address was erected at some unknown date before 1905. In 1903, Alson Sawyer purchased the property. Sawyer, variously listed in the city directories as a bartender and laborer, resided in a cabin behind the main house for a short time in about 1909. In 1919, Minnie Freel purchased the house and lot, and began a long tenure at this address. Freel was widowed at the time she acquired the property and a son William lived there with her into the mid-1920s. At least during the late 1910s and early 1920s, she worked as a laundress for the Gallatin Laundry Company, while her son worked as a laborer. Freel lived at 314 N. Rouse until the early 1940s. In 1940, she deeded the house to her son, then living in Laurel. In 1946, William Freel sold the house (presumably shortly after her death). In 1947, Lee and Edna Ping purchased the house. Mr. Ping worked as a bartender. After his death, Edna Ping remained at the house until 1978-1979. INFORMATION SOURCESBIBLIOGRAPHY ❑ See Additional Information Page 1904 Sanborn map R.L. Houses of this scale and level of detailing were typical of working-class neighborhoods in turn-of-the-century American towns, and it is the characteristic building type in Bozeman's northeastern residential neighborhoods. This portion of the community was home to much of Bozeman's small industrial area -- primarily devoted to the processing and shipping of agricultural products --and consequently, much of the neighborhood's residential component served blue-collar workers and their families. In general, these houses were smaller and less ornate than those found elsewhere in the town. The bulk of the neighborhood's homes were constructed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of growth for the town of Bozeman as a whole, and particularly for the northeastern neighborhood, which benefitted from proximity to the newly-constructed Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road railway lines. This house, therefore, is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular residential architecture, as well as for its association with the early growth of Bozeman and its agricultural industry. The building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity(as described below). Because of this loss of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by non-historic alterations to the building's exterior, primarily the addition of non-historic exterior cladding to the building. - hrP +.r T1 '.•_ '• - mot, u 00 kf) C% vl O O Y u CL CL CL ke) O y N tn 0M0 C ON oll w U 'C O O O O O O O O O U V) V] V) V) V] V] V] V] Am z z Z o z z z z z z z z +"' U U U U U U U U a yy yy CO (C R R CC CC CQ CC N y O O O O O O O O VD 4. 4; 4 4 4y 4 4; 4; L M M M M M M M M w C.
