Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a one-story rectangular building with concrete-block walls and a concrete foundation. The concretre blocks are
rounded at the building corners and the edges of fenestration areas. The building's flat roof has stepped parapets all
around, symmetrical on the east elevation, and stepping downward (to the west) on the north and south elevations.
The primary elevation faces east; it is marked by a large opening at the center that probably once housed an overhead
garage door. This is now a recessed entry area containing large, metal-framed commercial windows and a full-light
person door. Other windows on the building are largely original; these are U5 light steel-framed units. There are
additional entries on the north, east, and south sides, all of which have aluminum-framed glass doors with windows.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
Prior to 1932, apparently no building stood on the north end of Lots 17-19 in this city block. By 1933, Andrew Aarli had
established a cabinet-making shop at this location. At that time, the parcel was owned by Ernest J. Parkin, a real estate
agent. In 1935, Parkin, who conceivably could have built the shop to Aarli's specifications, sold the property to Aarli.
Andrew and brother Gutterson Aarli worked out of the Rouse Avenue shop until shortly before the beginning of World
War II.
In the fall of 1941, Aarli sold the lots and building to Gene Miller and Mary Brown. During their ownership, the shop was
used for a short time as the garage for City Taxi. After World War II, the building housed auto sales and repair
businesses (including Sullivan Motors and Wally Reed's Garage), the Nash-Davis Machinery Company, and the field
office for the contractor Albert Lalonde Company.
The new, aluminum-frame doors were part of extensive renovation that the building underwent a few years ago.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a representative example of a vernacular commercial workshop building from the middle years of the
twentieth century. Buildings of this scale and function are scattered throughout the northeastern Bozeman area, and
their presence is a characteristic of the neighborhood. Most were constructed during the early years of the twentieth
century, and this is a relatively late example. Consequently, it shares few visual similarities with earlier commercial
buildings in the area. The design is heavily utilitarian, with the only detail provided by the rounded concrete-block
corners and stepped parapet walls. The building's location near the intersection of Bozeman's commercial and
northeast residential areas is relflective of its mixed retail and workshop history.
This building is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular commercial/industrial
architecture, as well as for its association with the twentieth-century growth of Bozeman and its commercial trades. The
building, however, suffers from a diminished level of historic integrity(as described below). Because of this loss of
integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been slightly diminished by non-
historic alterations to the building's exterior. The most prominent of these changes is the removal of the original garage
door on the east elevation, and its replacement with modern commercial windows and an inset entry.
