Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a 2-story school building of irregular shape and "fireproof' (steel-reinforced concrete) construction. The main or
central portion is two stories tall and houses the classrooms, while the two perpendicular wings to the east are one
story in height. The north, nearly windowless wing houses the auditorium. The flat roof has flat parapets capped with
galvanized steel. There is a tall, stuccoed chimney at the northeast end of the building. Exterior walls are of stucco
over poured concrete. Most windows are single, paired, or triple double-hung 6/6 units in steel frames, but there are
some glass block windows. Banks of glass-brick windows, two stories high, indicate the location of interior stairwells
near the north and south ends of the building. All entry doors are modern, paired metal full-light units. The primary
elevation of the building faces west, and the main entry doors are there.
Deco detailing exists throughout the exterior of the historic building mass. The primary window areas are articulated
into vertical bays through the use of stepped vertical bands. Horizontal notched courses (to simulate dentils) are
present below the tops of the parapet. Stairwell-area window areas are topped with vertical detailing to simulate fluting.
Non-historic additions, only partially compatible in style, exist at the northwest and southwest corners of the original
building. They are of concrete construction, have flat roofs, and include fixed plate windows in tall, narrow openings.
Another, newer addition stands near the building's northeast corner. This is a wood-framed, gable-roofed modular
building with wide lap siding and small sliding windows. It is connected to the main building by a roughly-built enclosed
hallway.
There is a tiny separate building northwest of the school. It is listed as a "gas valve house" on the 1927/1943 Sanborn
map. It has a hip roof, brick walls (one row headers for six row stretchers), a steel door, and 6-light windows.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
In 1883, the East Side School was built at the center of the 100 block on the west side of North Church Avenue. It
underwent major expansion at the turn of the twentieth century, almost doubling in size. Renamed the Hawthorne
School in about 1905, the two-story brick building served into the 1930s.
Its replacement, the present Hawthorne School, was erected in 1939. This followed two contentious years among
members of the school board, some of whom wished to replace the old school buildings in Bozeman and others who
felt the replacements were not affordable. When a bond issue passed in 1938, provisions were made to replace the
Hawthorne and Longfellow Schools and construct an addition to the Willson School.
The new Hawthorne School stands at the opposite end of the city block from the old East Side School, facing Rouse
rather than Church Avenue. To make way for the new school, the school district removed several houses and a large
commercial storage building in that block, leaving a single residence intact along Mendenhall Street. In addition to
classrooms, the new school featured an auditorium and manual training area.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
The Hawthorne School is one of a series of Art Deco elementary and high school buildings constructed in Bozeman
during the late 1930s. All were designed by Fred Willson, the most prominent Bozeman architect of the era, and all
share design similarities. They are reflective of the city's growth during that era, and of the importance placed on
education by the community. Individually and collectively, they are also Bozeman's finest examples of Art Deco
architecture.
The Hawthorne School building is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic places, significant under criteria
"a" and "c."
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
The original portion of the Hawthorne School retains a high level of integrity overall, retaining all seven National
Register aspects of integrity. The non-historic additions to the building, while only partially compatible, are smaller in
scale than the main mass and do not significantly detract from it. The primary facades of the building remain virtually
unaltered. In all, the building continues to strongly evoke its historic appearance.
