Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is a one-story, masonry, commercial building, whose roughly L-shape is the result of extensive additions to the
original portion. It houses offices and storage for several enterprises.
The oldest portion of the building, at northwest the corner of Rouse and Mendenhall, is a brick building exhibiting two
phases of construction. (Sanborn maps indicate that the south part was built before north part). For both components
of this building segment, bricks are laid in a common bond with one row of headers for six rows of stretchers. On the
north part, there are tie-bar anchors on the east facade. Windows, under segmental brick arches, are of glass blocks
(non-historic); on the north side, window openings have been bricked in (under wood lintels). The entries have been
altered significantly. On the east facade (north part) is a vehicular entry with a paneled wood overhead door and (south
part) a man door and wood infill at the former location of another vehicle door.
Additions to the original building mass (to the west and north) are of concrete block. This is partially stuccoed, primarily
on the street elevations. The south entry in the addition area is an aluminum-framed glass door and plate window, set
in a former vehicle door. Other doors and windows here are also modern metal-framed units. Low, stepped parapets
are present to define entry points on the south and west elevations of the additions. The flat roof has flat parapets on
the south and east sides, with corner pedestals. The foundation is concrete.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
The oldest or southeast part of the building dates to about 1920. In that year, James F. McMullin purchased the south
50 feet of three lots in this block, apparently this being the first time that the smaller parcel was separated from a larger
block of 11 city lots. He immediately opened a blacksmith shop at this location. McMullin operated the shop until his
death in the mid-1920s. Following his death, his wife Maude managed the shop, but for no more than a few years. She
subsequently leased the shop to George Lomack for his auto repair business.
In mid-1928, Maude McMullin deeded the property to John A. Bartholomew. Bartholomew held the property for the
next seven years, but did not operate a shop there himself. Instead he rented to a number of blacksmiths, including
Fred Grove, Harley Smith, and possibly James Herrin. The next owner, A. R. Mackleberg, purchased the lots, brick
building, and even the blacksmith tools and equipment in 1935. During most of his 10-year ownership, Mackleberg
operated the Midwest Welding Shop in the building. In about 1945, a second shop was added to the building, perhaps
in the north addition. S.E. Moore repaired automobiles at the Midwest Garage in the adjacent storefront at 103 N.
Rouse.
In 1945, Mackleberg sold the building and his Midwest Welding Shop to Fletcher Hare. Calling his shop"Midwest
Welding and Machine Shop," Hare remained at the Rouse Avenue address into the late 1960s. He sold the building in
1969.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building is a representative example of a vernacular commercial workshop building from the early and middle
years of the twentieth century. Buildings of this scale and function are scattered throughout the northeastern Bozeman
area, and their presence is a characteristic of the neighborhood. The design is heavily utilitarian, with very minimal
detailing. The building's location, near the intersection of Bozeman's commercial and northeast residential areas, is
reflective of its mixed retail and workshop history.
This building is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular commercial/industrial
architecture, as well as for its association with the twentieth-century growth of Bozeman and its commercial trades. The
building, however, suffers from a greatly diminished level of historic integrity (as described below). Because of this loss
of integrity, the building is no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not independently eligible for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by substantial,
non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include large structural additions to the east and
south, and changes to historic fenestration in the original mass.
