Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
This is an irregularly-shaped commercial building, largely of masonry construction. It consists of an historic core (to the
northeast), and non-historic additions to the west and south. The original mass of the building is stuccoed, with a
rounded northeast corner. The rounded corner, combined with a projecting cornice line along the north and east
elevations, suggest that the building once had at least minimal Moderne detailing. Areas of brick veneer exist on these
elevations, beneath historic wood-framed windows. The modern entry door is metal, with a half-light window.
This original section is set in the ell of concrete-block additions built on its west and south sides. The cornice from the
original building mass extends along the north and east elevations of these additions. Most of the addition walls
(except for the west elevation) are stuccoed. The entire building has a concrete foundation and a flat roof behind
parapet walls.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
The original section of this building dates to about 1941. In August 1939, Rollo and Cleone Tuttle, who resided in Ennis
at the time, purchased the lot on which the new building would stand. Within about two years, they had erected a small
gas station, naming it"Tuttle's Service." The station apparently had no assocation with a regional or national oil
company, and, as was not uncommon for such "Mom and Pop"stations, the proprietors resided next door in an
adjacent building. The Tuttles remained in business for only a short time, though; the building was vacant in 1944.
This closure may have been due to the shortage of available gasoline during World War II.
Immediately after the war, Rollo Tuttle sold the building and land parcel to Maurice and Bernice Farnstrom. Farnstrom
operated the independent service station for only about three years, before selling out to Vernon McGahen. McGahen,
in turn, owned and ran the gas station for four years until late 1952, again as an independent. From 1953, through at
least 1961, Robert R. Braun had the gas station, in the latter year operating it as "Bob's Carter Servicecenter." The
name indicates an affiliation with the Carter Oil Company by that time. Like the Tuttles 20 years earlier, Robert and
Hazel Braun lived next door to his business, at 322 N. Mendenhall.
Tuttle's Service station was one of several independent service stations in Bozeman during and immediately after
World War II. Scattered throughout the town, they provided gas and often little else. By the 1970s, if not earlier, they
began to be replaced by larger gas stations that also had mechanics on hand. More and more, these came to be
owned by national oil companies. Even later, the stations incorporated convenience stores, and completely replaced
the older, independent businesses.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
This original mass of this building is a representative example of a mid-twentieth century gas station with simple
Moderne detailing. Several such buildings existed in and near Bozeman's commercial district during the middle years
of the twentieth century, reflecting the increased prominence of the automobile in daily life of the era. Most gas stations
were on Bozeman's Main Street, with a smaller number on prominent side streets. This station was probably sited here
in part because of the designation of North Rouse Avenue as a Montana state highway.
This building is potentially significant as a representative example of period vernacular commercial architecture, as well
as for its association with the twentieth-century growth of Bozeman and its commercial trades. Major additions to the
building, however(as described below), have cost it its historic integrity. Because of this loss of integrity, the building is
no longer a high-quality example of its type, and is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
This building retains integrity of location and setting. Other aspects of integrity have been diminished by substantial,
non-historic alterations to the building's exterior. These changes include large structural additions to the east and
south, and changes to historic fenestration.
