Often you ask whether the parking area proposed is sufficient for the expected occupants/users.. In considering this question you divide the area proposed by the area required for one vehicle.. In this context I found/you will find a recent Wall St Journal article (16 June 201, page 1) relevant. The 'parking space standard' is 8ft x 18 ft. The article says this is too small for many suburbans and pickups, so users commonly use two parking spaces, makes sense, and thus that the area assigned 'by the standard' will be too small. This will be especially relevant in a village like Bozeman where half the vehicles are SUV/PUs. I verified the claim by calling Ressler. A pickup is 22ft x 8ft without mirrors or bumpers (easily 1.5 feet each. A suburban is 18.6 ft x 7.5 ft, again without mirrors or front/back armor. Thus, where vehicles park 'between the lines (and not in optimal packing)' pickups/suvs must occupy two spaces and this must be factored into your calculations. Would you use a 24 ft x 10 ft standard, or larger? I direct my note to all of you, to building planners, and to Iho, who I know personally.
