Action Item
Water Heater
Consider installing a solar thermal hot water system
Attic
Install attic insulation
Whole House
Install crawl space and wall insulation
Consider installing a solar photovoltaic system (eligible for a 30% tax credit through 2019; the tax credit
decreases to 26% in 2020, 22% in 2021, and expires 12/31/2021)
When building a new home, consider Net Zero Energy or Net Zero Energy ready design. See
https://www.energy.gov/eere/buildings/zero-energy-buildings or https://newbuildings.org/resource/zero-net-
energy-resources/ for resources
Heating/Cooling
Upgrade your HVAC system to a higher efficiency system; make sure to get a right-sized unit.
Consider installing a ground source or mini-split heat pump.
Roof
Consider an Energy Star labeled white roof, metal roof or cool roof (coolroofs.org) to reduce heat gain. A cool
roof reflects sunlight and efficiently emits heat. Standard roofs can reach temperatures of 150°F or more in the
summer sun. By installing a cool roof, you can lower the temperature of your roof by up to 50°F and save energy
and money by using less air conditioning.
Windows
Consider replacing windows with Energy Star and NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) qualified models,
or installing storm windows.
Yard/Garden
Install permeable pavement for driveways, patios, and/or walkways.
Hot Tub
Consider purchasing a solar hot tub cover.
Install a high efficiency pump and heater.
Transportation
When purchasing a new or used vehicle, consider purchasing a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle. Look for
the most efficient models and tax credits up to $7500 at www.fueleconomy.gov.
Consider installing an EV charging station.
