Library Board of Trustees Appointment Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Brenda Sweeney, Deputy City Clerk Robin Crough, City Clerk SUBJECT: Appointment to the Library Board of Trustees MEETING DATE: July 16, 2018 AGENDA TYPE: Action RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint one member to the Library Board of Trustees to a term ending June 30, 2023. BACKGROUND: The Library Board of Trustees currently has one vacancy due to a termed-out position that expired on June 30, 2018. One new application has been received. The Library Board of Trustees is created under Section 22-1-308 of the Montana Code Annotated and Section 2.56.010 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. Under Section 2.56.010 of the B.M.C., the Board of Trustees of the Public Library shall be composed of five persons and shall be appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Commission, and shall serve without pay. The trustees shall hold their office for the term of five years, and one trustee shall be appointed annually at the beginning of each fiscal year (July 1) for the term of five years, and until his/her successor is appointed and qualifies. Trustees shall serve no more than two full terms in succession. They shall have power to select librarians and other employees as they may determine and fix the amount of any bond which they may require to be given by the librarian and other employees. They shall have power to receive books from all sources for the use and benefit of the library and to purchase books therefore with any money available for that purpose and power to prescribe all rules and regulations for the use of books and the preservation of the same. The board shall keep a record of its transactions and shall make a report to the City Commission at the close of each calendar year, covering the business transacted by it during the year (Ordinance No. 1163, 1984; Ordinance No. 1094 S 1, 1982; prior code S 2.08.200). No residency requirements are contained in either the M.C.A. or the B.M.C. Under state statutes, this Board is administrative. This board currently has one vacancy. Livingston School Board of Trustees six years Please explain your relevant qualifications, interests and experiences: My husband and I moved to Montana in 1993 and lived in Livingston until 2014, when we moved to Bozeman. I have 2o years of work/volunteer service in the non profit sector, in a range of areas of community service. I was employed by Bridger Care (formally Bdiger Clinic) in the early 1990s and most recently was the Executive Director of the Shane Lalani Center for the Arts. I resigned from that position last year and am now a part time ski instructor at Bridger Bowl. For the past twenty years I have always been active in community service, sitting on over a dozen boards and being elected to the Livingston School Board (chair 2yrs). It would be an honor to serve the Bozeman community as a Trustee of the Library. The library is an integral part of the community of Gallatin County. The facility, programs and services offered at the Library are excellent and I would love to become more involved in the organization.
