Over the past many months, you have been setting your course on addressing the affordable housing issue here in Bozeman. We understand that you must focus your efforts on the needs within the City’s jurisdiction. However, we respectfully request that you make the commitment that the City will coordinate and collaborate with other jurisdictions and organizations throughout the grater Gallatin Valley in addressing the needs of “affordable housing”. HRDC has been a true crusader in their effort to meet the needs of the low to moderate income segment of our greater community. Other non-profit organizations, such as the Salvation Army, Love Inc, Family Promise, Thrive, Haven, etc, work to not only complement HRDC’s efforts, but extend their assistance to those individuals and families that for one reason or another fall through the cracks. Without the efforts of these charitable organizations, many of those needing help would not have a source of needed assistance. Specifically, we would like to address the chain of need and hope. Thanks to the efforts of HRDC, light has been shed on the growing needs for shelter for homeless. They are taking on a large project to help provide housing for the homeless and working poor segment of our community. We support and commend them for their efforts. However, due to the cost associated with the HRDC’s project, we ask that you weigh the community’s need to address “affordable housing” to the cost and burden of impact fees and off-site improvements. By keeping the costs reasonable they will be better able to provide a much-needed service. It would be heartbreaking if their project cannot become a reality. We ask you to take a stand recognizing that by maintaining the status quo regarding the homeless and working poor, may in the end, cost far more in the future if it is not supported and addressed now. The Salvation Army nationally has a very clear vision of the pathway from poverty. It involves many diverse efforts of which housing is just one segment. We ask that you not only support HRDC’s efforts but encourage and support the continued efforts of all of the charitable organizations noted above, so we can continue grow and meet the needs of this rapidly growing segment of the community. We wish you the very best in your efforts to serve our community. Mike Money President Advisory Board of the Bozeman Salvation Army.
