Sirr - Sourdough LoggingFrom:beth sirr To:Agenda Subject:Sourdough Logging Date:Thursday, May 03, 2018 1:56:30 PM Dear Commissioners and Mayor Andrus, I was alarmed to read the plan to log Sourdough, especially if the desired effect was to reduce the risk of fire and better protect the city water source. The science I have read suggests logging would do just the opposite. Logged areas melt out earlier, drying out more easily in hot months, and thus become MORE susceptible to fires. If your team has different science I would appreciate a chance to learn more. Wildfires in MT occur 60% of the time in grass and brush lands, as as California has shown with hot, dry, windy conditions urban areas will be impacted as well. Delaying runoff so trees can absorb moisture longer protects our forests, streams and fish as we move into July and August. MSU's Climate Science Study has data that can inform all of us on what we should prepare for. Perhaps, Cathy Whitlock as a local expert could advise the city on watershed protections that would be most effective? The TED Radio Hour April 12, 2018 program, " Everything Is Connected" includes an excellent study on an area selectively logged and the impact on birds. Finally, I have learned my suggestions may not be making it to you. I think with influx of people water conservation efforts should start asap with new home developments. Have you considered the following: 1. allowing grey water systems? If not, locally, there are experts on these and perhaps they would benefit city overall. 2. The Montana Native Plant Society here in Bozeman encourages water conservation by planting shade trees, native plants & grasses rather lawns. Could the city require or promote water conserving landscape designs that also help keep neighborhoods cooler? Seems new construction presents a great opportunity to avoid demands exceeding supply. Thank you! Beth Sirr 406-451-4525
