Dear Mayor and City Commissioners,
I attended the Commission meeting last night primarily to hear the report on Parking Districts and to
provide my experience with the MSU Resident Only Parking District. I will not be able to attend the next
Commission meeting as I will be out of town.
We have lived at 1122 South 5th (corner of 5th and Garfield) since 1983. When the Resident-only Parking
District went into effect, the greatest benefit we noticed was the dramatic reduction of car traffic in our
neighborhood. Prior to the District, Garfield had very heavy car traffic between 7:30am and 9am and a
pretty steady stream of cars until about 2pm. There was a lot of traffic on surrounding streets as well. We
had not realized just how many people were driving through our neighborhood looking for parking.
As you know, this is a residential neighborhood and it is not designed to handle such traffic. There are many
uncontrolled intersections. The neighborhood has not changed much since that time. There are a few more
stop signs but the roads are narrow. There is a significant amount of pedestrian, bicycle and skateboard
traffic. However, the university has grown and now has a significantly larger student population. If this
neighborhood is opened to non-residential, weekday parking I am afraid that the traffic will be terrible. It
will make our neighborhood a thoroughfare rather than a residential space.
Changing the parking rules effects more than just the number of cars parked on the street. It effects the
number of cars driving through and around our neighborhood, looking for a parking space. Please consider
more than the number of parked cars in your evaluation of the effects.
Thank you.
